When engaging in public policy communications, our goal is to cut through the noise and attract the attention of busy policymakers. High-quality policy analysis is a good starting point, but it is not enough. Effective policy communication means persuasively combining evidence and data with stories and values to connect with audiences. The language used needs to be concise and understandable, but also stimulating and actionable. Rather than an ad hoc or reactive mechanism, effective public policy communication needs to be planned, strategic, and continuous.
The aim of this week-long course is to improve your policy communication skills for maximum impact. The first part of the course (Day 1) focuses on the basics of effective public policy communication, including techniques for audience analysis and policy storytelling. The second part (Days 2 and 3) focuses on three established policy communication formats – position papers, policy briefs, op-eds. Through case studies and hands-on exercises, the participants are equipped with practical skills they can apply in real-world scenarios. Participants also have the opportunity to send their writing to the instructor after the training for direct feedback on their work as well as suggested areas of improvement.

- Developing your skills for policy brief, position paper, and op-ed writing for policy impact.
